Mechanicsville, VA is a small town rich in southern heritage. The area was settled by English colonists starting in the 17th century. The town is associated with several major battles and numerous minor skirmishes during the American Civil War. In “Old Mechanicsville” stands a stone windmill, now a landmark in the village.
Quickly becoming another landmark and favorite eatery for locals as well as folks passing thru is Carter’s PigpenBar-B-Que. The building, a former home, is easily recognized by its sky blue walls and pink pig painted on the roof. Carter’s offers Carolina and Virginia style pulled pork barbecue. The BBQ as well as side dishes come from original southern recipes.
Owner Grace Hughes, who grew up in “Old Mechanicsville”, and her daughter and manager, Ashley Lawrence, believe in small town values like “Quality not Quantity”. They also see their customers and staff as their most valuable assets. These are just a couple of reasons that make Carter’s different than “chain restaurants”.
